Exploring theory as well as application, according to a recently released article by Google on current progress in Machine intelligence, much of google’s work on language, speech, translation, visual processing, ranking, and prediction relies on Machine Intelligence. In all of those tasks and many others came the implementation of artificial intelligence in the Gmail App that necessitated the new built-in features or tools called Smart-Reply and Smart-Compose.

Other Smart Features of Inbox (Gmail)
Google Now is smart enough to detect almost up to anything in your Gmail inbox. From your order tracking to Airplane delay.
Google basically just integrated all of that in a new service called Inbox.
Now, what Inbox does is, it scans through your email, and brings up the important bits with the help of an algorithm that helps identify: Images, Videos, Documents, Important Information which is different for every category.
So, this is my assumption that Inbox has a different algorithm together for Finance, Travel, Forums, Updates, etc. Also, it bundles all of these together to make it simpler. You can turn it off or on whenever you want.
